Does freedom mean anti-crime South
Africa?
After 1994 where our country was promised peace and tranquility for
all. I thought that we escaped the struggle that our parents went through, and
that we were going to live peacefully without any fear of being rejected,
abused or denied opportunities because of the color of our skin, gender and
even age.
At the new supposedly free South Africa one thing that still bothers me
and that I fear every day regardless of where I am is that there might be
humans out there who are more powerful than me, who might hurt and even kill me
because is m a women and powerless. I fear walking at the streets alone, I fear
being at home alone and I still fear staying in campus till late because I
don't know what those cruel men out there might do to me, as the world has turn
a jungle where only the fittest will survive.
I dreamt of a place where one lived to their full expectations, where
one did not have to fear making a life worth living and better as that means
you will be a target of criminals after all the sweat and sleepless nights working
to do good for yourself. I woke up in that dream, woken by a sound of more than
three gun shots and after a while had sirens of an ambulance and later had from
the police. The perpetrators are long gone, some of the victims died few
minutes before the ambulance made it to the incident zone while the other
victims couldn't even make it to the hospital alive. Then someone please tell
me what makes me special, to think that I will not be a victim one of the days?
I guess it's normal in our country but still shocks me.
'We can't afford to be killing each other' Nelson Mandela
I pray for a world with human beings that have conscious that will
always remind them of the term Ubuntu where it assures that I am because you
are, where there will be no human being who will be willing to kill for
appraisal, where there will be no one who is willing to forcefully to take what
does not belong to them without permission. I pray for a world where a person's
live can be valued and not be taken away and do nothing about it. A world where
my parents will be your parents, where an elder must not die because they no
longer have the power to fight back, where a women must not be treated as a
slavery because of what she doesn't have, be abused in all kinds because of
being not masculine and even be killed for saying no to what they believe in.
I pray for a world where our brothers and sisters can live freely
without being criticized and questioned because of their choices of lifestyle.
A world that is free of any crime where one can live knowing that who I am will
not get me killed and even my choices will not be questioned and criticized
because other people do not believe in them and even what I have will be a key
to criminals forcefully and intimidating me to feel that I don't deserve to
have those things.
The rates of unemployment might be high even exceeding the rates of
employment there are still those talents that we have that most industries in
our country are lacking and in need for that God gave us. In rural areas we
were blessed with more than enough land to make a living for ourselves.
All I am praying for is a peaceful world with all Individuals being
given equal opportunities and treated as human beings despite our gender, color,
religion and even age to be able to better our lives.
